October 2021: Essential for salvation

October 2021: Essential for salvation

The question of what really matters often crops up in the course of a human life. And often the following recommendation is given: let’s concentrate on the essentials.

Even the disciples had to learn this: if the message they were proclaiming was to reach the people, they would have to focus on the essentials. They had to leave everything else aside, especially the Jewish ideas on circumcision and the dietary rules. This was simply not necessary for salvation.

The same is true for us today. We are to take the message of salvation in Jesus Christ to all people. And that will only be possible if we concentrate on the essentials. Everything that has to do with our person, our history, and our culture is not relevant for salvation. We have to make a distinction here if we want to pass Christ’s doctrine of salvation on. Earthly rules of conduct may change over time, but the message of salvation remains.

Likewise, when it comes to our children, it is important that we think about what is truly important for salvation. We do not want to impose our own way of life on them. What we want is that they can experience God as we experience Him. This is what is important!

As we look towards the celebration of Thanksgiving, we are reminded that the past couple of years have presented us all with a variety of challenges.  For some, this has meant long periods of time where they have been unable to gather in our churches.  For others, their employment, education and travel plans have been disrupted.  However, we can be assured that despite these obstacles, there is still much to be thankful for.

The Staying Connected working group, our youth, and our Sunday School children have put together several presentations around the theme of Thanksgiving.

These presentations are available to view by clicking on the links below.

As we continue to navigate life in the Covid era, we are faced with daily information updates, ongoing restrictions, and changes to our “normal” way of life. Many of our members continue to live under lockdown conditions, and there are those who experience uncertainty in their home, school, and work environments.

The Staying Connected work group has put together a series of messages, discussing the emotional, psychological and mental health challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. These messages are aimed towards different groups within our congregations and community.

Please note: these messages have been composed with the assistance of a registered psychologist, however it is important to note that the information contained within is of a general nature.

September 2021: Representation

September 2021: Representation

When athletes take part in the Olympic Games, they also represent the country under whose flag they are competing. The symbols of the different nations are omnipresent, especially at the awards ceremonies.

For many this is a huge additional motivation not only to train and compete for their own success but also for their country. If they do their job well, they might even receive a decoration from their head of state at home. For this they do not even necessarily have to come back with a gleaming medal hanging from their neck. Sometimes those who did not win but gave everything and behaved in an exemplary manner are celebrated the most.

We are disciples of Jesus, whom He has sent into the world to represent Him. In our everyday lives—whether it is the children at school or the parents at work—we do not only work upon our own success. We represent Jesus Christ. Our mission is to live up to Him and His teaching—a wonderful motivation to grow more and more into His nature.

What we receive in return eclipses any medals or other decorations: whoever represents Jesus, whoever stands up for Him and fights for Him, can be absolutely sure that Jesus will do the same for him, regardless of whether we are successful or not.
