March 2021: Final exams

March 2021: Final exams

Anyone who trains for a trade or studies for a profession has to sit final exams. The examinees do not have to be perfect and pass with distinction, earning a summa cum laude, but it should be evident that they are capable of handling their chosen profession without any problems.

As those who have been reborn, we are also going through a kind of vocational training. We have been called to rule together with Jesus Christ in His kingdom of peace as the royal priesthood and to proclaim the gospel to the people. We are being prepared for this in the divine services. In everyday life – the practical part – we are to put into practice what we hear in the services, follow Christ, and serve Him and our neighbour, and share the gospel. When Jesus returns, He will test us and take those along, who are ready to carry out their calling as part of the royal priesthood in the thousand-year kingdom of peace. We do not have to be perfect, nor can we attain perfection by then, but it should be apparent that we are capable of handling the task with God’s help.

Fortunately, we have a Master who is always there to help us. When He sees our efforts, He will grant us His grace and will gladly add what is still lacking in the end.

February 2021: A matter of definition

February 2021: A matter of definition

People have the most diverse ideas about what constitutes happiness. Many anchor their happiness to earthly wellbeing, while others consider their health to be the top priority. Still others can only feel happy when they are surrounded by family and friends.

Thus there are many things that we might regard as basic prerequisites for being happy. The one thing they all have in common is that they are linked to a certain attitude of expectation: God has to give us something—money, health, people—in order for us to be happy.

And God also wants us to be happy. He is not only interested in our future in His kingdom, but also takes an interest in our lives here on earth. However, He has a somewhat different interpretation of what constitutes happiness. Jesus has given us the gospel and has given us the mission to put it into practice. He calls upon us to love God above everything else, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. If we apply this to our daily lives, we will be guaranteed to always have a heart filled with peace and joy, even if we at times find ourselves in situations of financial distress, illness, or loneliness. He wants to make us happy already today here on earth—irrespective of the conditions of life in which we happen to find ourselves at any given moment. But we must also do something for this, namely trust Him and accept His word.

January 2021: Christ, our future!

January 2021: Christ, our future!

The past year 2020 was characterised by the coronavirus pandemic. There is one thing that this crisis has not been able to take from us: our trust in God! He is and remains our heavenly Father, who wants only the best for His children.

This faith is also to define our future. Although we do not know what this new year 2021 will hold in store for us, we begin it in the certainty that Jesus is coming soon! That is the goal of our faith. Hence the motto for this year is: “Christ, our future!”

  • Christ is our future because He gives us certainty. In Him we find the energy and motivation required to endure on our path of faith. Neither the difficulties of life nor the conduct of others are to discourage us. Let us resolutely make our way to the goal.
  • Christ is our future because He is our salvation and wants to perfect us. His death and resurrection are the basis for this. He knows that we are capable of attaining salvation and provides us with everything necessary for this purpose. The promise of the Lord that He will bring His work to completion is certain. By remaining faithful to Him, we can hope in His grace. And we can be certain that His glory will outshine all of our sorrows.
  • Christ is our future because He is the solution for our future. Now it is up to us to decide how we live, how we act, and how we believe. In order to live with Christ forever we already today seek fellowship with Him. His gospel is the foundation on which we build our life as a couple, raise our children, and establish our relationship with our neighbour. Jesus Christ is the model we want to resemble.

I wish you all peaceful thoughts and experiences for this year. May the blessing of God accompany you, and may the peace of the Risen One be with you! Let us keep our trust in Jesus Christ, because our spiritual future depends on it. By keeping our eyes fixed on Christ we will reach the goal!

Heartfelt greetings,

Jean-Luc Schneider

A message for 2021

A message for 2021

We begin the new year with the certainty that Jesus is coming soon! On the first Sunday, we will celebrate our beginning of the year service with our focus on the motto issued by the Chief Apostle for the year 2021, “Christ, our future!”. In this new year, we will continue to prepare ourselves for the return of Christ by seeking His fellowship and adjusting ourselves to His teaching. We all can be focussed on what is essential in our congregations.

In Christ we find the energy and motivation for today. We do not want to be distracted by logical human evaluation for the management of our lives. Filled with the anticipation of achieving an eternity with the Lord, we apply the maxim of our Chief Apostle, “Christ is the solution!”

And now, “Christ, our future!”
